HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – Keith Eric Benson, 46, from Trenton, faces grand theft charges after allegedly pilfering a laptop from his workplace in High Springs.
According to an officer from the High Springs Police Department (HSPD), a manager at Theme Works requested the filing of charges against Benson following the discovery of the missing laptop on February 2. The company’s IT provider traced the laptop’s IP address to an internet service used in the Trenton area. When the device was last powered on, its username had been altered to “Benson.”
Further investigations by the IT team revealed that the login credentials for Benson’s work email on his phone matched the same IP address as that of the missing laptop.
An HSPD Detective issued a subpoena to identify the physical location tied to the IP address. The internet service provider’s response indicated the address was indeed Benson’s residence.
An officer and a detective spoke with Benson at Theme Works, and post Miranda, Benson reportedly declined to make any statements, but when the detective said he would try to locate the laptop, Benson reportedly stated spontaneously that the laptop was not at his residence. The arrest report does not provide any more information about whether the laptop was located.
Benson has been charged with grand theft. He has two felony convictions and one misdemeanor conviction. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $5,000.
