Robert Aramayo Triumphs with Double BAFTA Victory, Celebrates at Don Julio Bar

Robert Aramayo made a memorable entrance at the Don Julio Tequila winners bar at the Southbank Centre on Sunday, celebrating his triumphant evening at the BAFTAs. The 33-year-old British actor was all smiles, clutching his two awards with pride as he posed for photos alongside his parents, Michael and Lisa, and his sister, Laura.

The evening was a joyful one for Aramayo, whose surprise double victory left him beaming. He shared a tender moment with his mother, Lisa, who looked radiant in a pink satin dress, as he embraced her warmly.

Aramayo’s performance in “I Swear” earned him the Leading Actor Award at the ceremony held at The Royal Festival Hall. His win was particularly notable as he edged out strong competitors like Timothee Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio for the honor.

Anticipation surrounded Aramayo’s win, given his recent accolades at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes last month for his role in “Marty Supreme.” His victory at the BAFTAs seems to cement his status as a rising star in the industry.

The Marty Supreme star was predicted to win the prestigious gong after his previous wins at both the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes last month. 

However, Robert ended the American actor’s winning streak much to the disbelief of the audience, as he bagged the award for his role in the biopic centred on campaigner John Davidson’s life amid his Tourette’s diagnosis.

John was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at a time when little was known about the condition and the film depicts his younger years living in Galashiels , when he was first diagnosed.

It was a category full of big names, as Robert was also nominated alongside Leonardo for his role in One Battle After Another. 

Others in the category included Ethan Hawke for his role in Blue Moon, Michael B. Jordan for his role in Sinners and Jesse Plemons for his role in Bugonia.

Overcome with emotion, Robert told the crowd: ‘I absolutely can’t believe this. I can’t believe I’m looking at people like you [Leonardo DiCaprio] never mind that I’m stood here.

He added: ‘I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award I really cannot. Everyone in this category blows me away.

‘When I was in school Ethan Hawke came to speak to us at Juillard and he gave an amazing talk on longevity as an actor, protecting your instrument and avoiding self destructive behaviours, it had an incredible impact on every one in that room.’

As the camera panned to the fellow actors in the category, Leonardo was seen clapping politely while Timothee also managed a smile. 

As his name was announced, Robert’s father jumped to his feet and was shouting as he expressed his delight and the pair embraced in a hug.

Earlier in the evening Robert also won the EE Rising Star Award, the only accolade voted for by the public. 

Also nominated in the category was Miles Caton, Chase Infiniti, Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling.

He said: ‘Oh my word this is really scary last time I was at the BAFTAs I dropped the award, so I hope this goes better. Wow I can’t believe this it really blows my mind. 

‘I want to acknowledge my family who support me all the time. I can see my dad up there and my mum and my sister and my amazing partner.

‘I love you all so much and my second family, my I Swear family, thank you so much for letting me tell your story. John Davidson is the most amazing person I have ever met.’

Robert Aramayo’s father said that it was like hearing your son had been picked to play football for Barcelona when his boy got into New York’s Juilliard School. He was the only Brit among 4,000 admitted.

Originally from Hull, Aramayo has established himself in the public eye after parts in Game of Thrones and The Lord of The Rings.

After Robert won the EE Rising Star Award, host Alan Cumming took the opportunity to thank the audience for their understanding after I Swear’s John Davidson let out involuntary shouts due to his Tourette’s during the ceremony.

He told the crowd: ‘You may have heard some strong offensive language tonight, but if you’ve seen the film I Swear, it’s about the experience of a person with Tourette’s syndrome. 

‘It is a disability and the ticks you have heard tonight are involuntary that means the person who has Tourette’s syndrome has no control over their language and we apologise if it has caused offence.’ 

One Battle After Another was the big winner at the 2026 British Academy Film Awards on Sunday night, as it scooped six gongs during the ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

The Paul Thomas Anderson hit had already received a record 14 nominations, and came out on top as it won Best Film, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Cinematography and Editing.

While Jessie Buckley won Best Actress honour for her role in Hamnet, having been favourite to do so, the night wasn’t without surprises, as Timothee Chalamet missed out on Best Actor to a home-grown favourite.

Despite being tipped as a favourite for the honour for his role in Marty Supreme, Timothee lost out on the prize to I Swear star Robert Aramayo.

As One Battle For Another was awarded Best Film, producer Sarah Murphy said: ‘We wish more than anything that our producing partner Adam Somner could be here to accept this on behalf of us on his home turf.’

Director and producer Paul Thomas Anderson said: ‘Thank you for rewarding our film in the way that you have, its just a tremendous honour. 

‘I’m well aware of the other films that share this. Anybody that says movies aren’t any good any more they can piss off because this is just a great f*****g year.’

He added that he planned to go and find a ‘bar somewhere to go celebrate.’

Jessie Buckley won Best Actress honour for her role in Hamnet, having been favourite to do so

The biggest loser of the evening was the highly acclaimed ping pong drama Marty Supreme, which went into the evening as one of the favourites, with 11 nominations. It came away completely empty-handed.

Jessie, who is already tipped as a favourite to win the Oscar for Best Actress, used her acceptance speech to thank her fellow nominees.

She said: ‘This is really such an incredible honour. As a little girl I never thought in a million years I would be allowed to make a film but here I am. 

‘When I arrived into my agent Lindy King in London, and I had nuclear bad fake tan on, white hoop earrings, a polka dot red skirt and dress, and I had the audacity to say to her that I dreamed to someday be something like Judi Dench. 

‘I don’t know how on gods green earth she even dreamed that was possible. Thank you Lindy for always encouraging me to be disobedient and curious and human.

‘This really does belong to the women who have taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently.’

Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku was among the early winners as she received the award for Supporting Actress for her role in the Ryan Coogler film.

Mosaku, who is pregnant with her second child, thanked her husband, family and daughter from the stage, and said that her mother had ‘beamed’ her love at her ‘to give me the freedom to make my choices.’

She said that playing priestess Annie in Sinners she had connected with a part of herself which she had ‘dimmed as an immigrant trying to fit in.’

Ryan Coogler wrote the role of Hoodoo priestess Annie in Sinners especially for Mosaku, who was raised in Manchester and sang for 11 years in the Manchester Girls’ Choir.

A Rada graduate, she was catapulted into the spotlight in the 2010 film I Am Slave, in which she played a Sudanese girl sold into slavery. 

She won a TV BAFTA as Best Supporting Actress for her role as Damilola Taylor’s mother Gloria in Damilola, Our Loved Boy, and has appeared in blockbusters Deadpool & Wolverine and Batman vs Superman.

The actress was born in Zaria, Nigeria to parents who are both professors, but she now lives in Los Angeles and is expecting her second child.

‘It’s just been the best feeling ever because we really loved this film,’ said Mosaku, who has previously won a Bafta TV Award for her role as Gloria Taylor in the TV film Damilola, Our Loved Boy.
