Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, stood before a California court on Monday, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of murdering his parents late last year.
During a hearing in a Los Angeles County courtroom, Reiner pleaded not guilty to the charges. This comes months after his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, aged 78 and 70 respectively, were tragically found stabbed to death in their Brentwood residence. The grim discovery was made by the couple’s daughter approximately 12 hours following the incident, and Nick Reiner was taken into custody shortly thereafter, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has stated that his office is still deliberating on whether to seek the death penalty against Reiner, who faces charges of murder under special circumstances.
Reiner is currently represented by a public defender, following the withdrawal of his previous attorney, Alan Jackson, who stepped down for reasons that have not been disclosed.
The next court appearance for Nick Reiner is set for late April. However, District Attorney Hochman noted that a preliminary hearing will take time due to the extensive review of evidence involved in this case.
A motive has not been disclosed.
