In Michigan, a mother is facing charges of neglect after her two young children with special needs were discovered alone at home, with one resorting to eating raw, spoiled meat out of hunger.
The Flint Township Police Department responded to a welfare check call and were met with appalling conditions inside the residence, as detailed in a Facebook post by the department.
“Crossing into the home felt like stepping into a scene of neglect,” the post recounted. “The floors were so littered with trash that walking required careful navigation. Water from a continuously running faucet spilled onto the floor, resonating through rooms left unattended for far too long.”
Authorities reported that the faucets were left running, and there was fecal matter smeared on the walls at a child’s height. The children, whose exact ages were not provided, lacked clean clothing and had no access to food. Additionally, they had no means to contact anyone outside for help.
While investigating, officers found one child consuming the raw, decayed meat and another child curled up on a bedroom floor.
Police did not describe the children’s special needs or say how long they had been left alone except in vague terms.
“Their mother, the person who should have been their fiercest protector, the one voice meant to calm their fears and meet their needs, walked away,” police said. “No caregiver stepping in, no safeguards. Just absence.”
Police said a neighbor had called 911 requesting the welfare check. They eventually found the children’s mother, Krystal Farmer, and she has been charged with child abandonment, child abuse, and lying to a peace officer.
She was arraigned on Saturday, and, despite the almost poetic post on the police department’s Facebook page, was given a mere $64,000 bond, WNEM said. Her next court date is March 5.
The children are now safe, police said, although they did not say where.
