Howard Collins, the Transport for NSW Coordinator-General, highlighted the significant use of buses in the state, noting that over 345 million journeys are made annually on more than 800 buses.
“Buses are large and heavy, which makes it difficult for them to stop quickly. It’s crucial for all road users to provide adequate space for them,” Collins emphasized.
He advised against cutting in front of or tailgating buses and urged extra caution when navigating a bus’s blind spot, as drivers may have limited visibility.
“The footage released today serves as a powerful reminder for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant around buses,” Collins stated.
He added, “When walking, stay alert and aware of your surroundings.”
“Cross the road at a safe place, such as a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights, or somewhere with a good line of sight, to see approaching traffic, and so they can see you, and never step out in front of a bus.”
Between 2021 and 2025, there have been 45 fatalities from bus crashes across NSW.
Among the deaths were 12 drivers of other vehicles, 10 pedestrians and four motorcyclists.
As part of Bus Safety Week, NSW Transport will raise awareness by displaying safety messages across social media, audio messages, visual signage at train stations and on major overhead roads.
