On a seemingly ordinary Monday afternoon, a segment of a major highway in Buffalo, New York, became an unexpected pasture for livestock. Traffic came to a halt as two lanes were temporarily closed, thanks to a rather unusual incident involving a livestock trailer.
Chaos ensued when several cows managed to escape their trailer and found themselves wandering freely on the roadway. The situation prompted immediate action, and officials swiftly moved to secure the animals and ensure the safety of all involved.
The closure was necessary as teams worked diligently to round up three adventurous cows that had ventured onto a grassy area between the highways, causing quite a scene for passing motorists. After a concerted effort, the cows were successfully corralled, allowing the highway to reopen and traffic to resume its normal flow.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A major highway reopened after two lanes were closed Monday afternoon due to multiple cows exiting a livestock trailer and running loose in the area.
The roads were closed, NITTEC said, as officials attempted to catch three cows on a grassy area between the highways and in the road. The cows were eventually corralled.

According to New York State Police, a livestock trailer pulled onto the shoulder and the cows got loose.
“The traffic slowed down and we couldn’t see right away what was happening, and as we got closer my boyfriend’s mom said, are those deer in the center? And as we got a little bit closer she goes, I think those are cows!” said Michelle Frechette.

“My GPS said there was an accident, so I was expecting to see a couple cars in a ditch or something. But it ended up being a couple of cows in the median,” said Keith Bradley.
“This cow kept on going back and forth and all these people were pulled over to the side of the road trying to help. It was crazy,” said Dennis Galligan.
No crashes or injuries were reported, but the scene caused plenty of double takes. While the cows may have caused a brief delay, drivers said it was a commute they won’t forget anytime soon.
“We were just a little dumbfounded because that certainly is not an everyday event,” Frechette said.
