BURKE COUNTY, Ga. – In a troubling series of events, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office has brought to light two alarming incidents involving an inmate and correctional staff. These events underscore the challenges faced by detention officers in maintaining safety and order within correctional facilities.
The inmate at the center of these incidents has been identified as Jayven Ward. Ward has been in custody since June 10, 2025, facing a slew of serious charges. His charges include Felony Murder, two counts of Armed Robbery, a charge of 1st Degree Home Invasion, and three counts of Aggravated Assault, along with three felony gun charges.
The first incident occurred when Ward allegedly assaulted a detention officer by throwing a mixture of toilet water and urine during the officer’s routine duties. This disturbing act was soon followed by a second incident the next day, in which Ward, after being transferred to another cell, reportedly hurled human waste at a different officer.
In response to these unsettling attacks, both officers adhered strictly to the health and safety protocols in place. They underwent medical evaluations and decontamination procedures to ensure their well-being. Thankfully, it has been reported that both officers sustained no physical harm and are receiving the necessary support to cope with these incidents.

Ward is facing additional criminal charges related to Felony Obstruction of a detention officer, and the incidents remain under investigation.
Sheriff Alfonzo William stated, “Our detention officers work in challenging and often dangerous conditions. These incidents underscore the urgent need for modernization of our aging jail facility. The current infrastructure limits our ability to safely manage high-risk inmates and protect both staff and other detainees. While our staff continues to perform their duties professionally and courageously, they deserve a facility designed with today’s safety standards in mind. We remain committed to protecting our employees, the inmates in our care, and the community as a whole.”
The Sheriff’s Office said they will continue working with the County Commission to pursue long-term solutions that enhance safety, accountability, and operational effectiveness within the detention facility. These types of incidents further complicate the already challenging process of hiring and retaining qualified personnel. Moreover, the urgent need to transfer inmates to other facilities while we await improvements to our own is becoming increasingly critical.
