Triumphant Start: 4 Local Teams Advance in GHSA Girls State Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. — On Tuesday night, four local high school girls’ basketball teams emerged victorious in the opening round of the GHSA state tournament.

In an impressive display, Bryan County triumphed over Georgia Military College with a resounding score of 68-26. Bryan County’s head coach, Mario Mincey, expressed confidence in his team’s potential for a successful postseason.

“We’ve been in this position before,” Mincey stated. “We have a strong tradition of playing hard, reaching the state playoffs, and making significant progress.”

The Metter girls’ basketball team also showcased their prowess by defeating Johnson County 72-17, dominating the first quarter with a 30-3 lead.

Meanwhile, Jenkins secured their spot in the second round after comfortably overcoming Douglas. By the third quarter, Jenkins had taken a commanding lead, while Douglas remained in single digits, resulting in a 60-24 win for Jenkins.

Over at Savannah Country Day, the Lady Hornets faced off against in-city rival Calvary Day. Early in the second period, the game was tied at 10, but Country Day closed out the period scoring 18 unanswered points as they went into the locker room up 28-10. Country Day win, 57-23.

The only upset of the day happened in Hinesville. Lumpkin County, who was seeded No. 19, knocked off Liberty County, who was seeded No. 14 and finished second in Region 3-AAA, 39-33.
