Augusta, Ga. – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was called to a scene earlier today following a traffic incident at the intersection of Washington Road and Charlestown Way.

Lt. Kelly reported that deputies encountered off-duty Richmond County Deputy Jeremiah Welch, who had been driving his personal vehicle and was involved in the crash.

Investigations revealed that Deputy Welch was responsible for the collision. The responding officers noted an alcohol odor on his breath, raising suspicion of impairment.

In light of these observations, the Georgia State Patrol was dispatched to the scene to lead the investigation into the crash and assess the potential for a DUI charge.

Upon arrival, a Georgia State Patrol trooper attempted to administer sobriety tests to Deputy Welch. However, he declined to participate in the testing.

Deputy Welch was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol for DUI and additional traffic-related charges associated with the accident. He is being transported to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

There were no injuries reported by either party as a result of the accident.

This investigation remains ongoing. Any further information will be released by the Georgia State Patrol. There is no booking photograph available at this time but when it becomes available it will be provided.
