An investigation is underway to determine if the globally renowned dance ensemble, Shen Yun, was the intended target of a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of the Australian Prime Minister’s residence in Canberra.
Shen Yun, known for its classical dance performances, may not initially seem like a source of political controversy. However, due to its connections with the long-oppressed group Falun Gong, it has become a significant target for the Chinese government.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese found himself embroiled in this situation as threatening emails, purportedly from China, were sent to the dance troupe.
One of the emails ominously stated, “If you proceed with the performance, the Lodge will be blown into ruins and blood will flow like a river.”
Lucy Zhao, representing the Falun Dafa Association of Australia, commented, “We must not allow such hate crimes and foreign interference by the Chinese Communist Party to persist in Australia.”
Threats to Australian politicians are on the rise, with almost 1000 last year, as security authorities fear that authoritarian nations, including China, are increasingly projecting their own internal political hostilities onto our shores.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor labelled the incident “unacceptable” as he called for “a united front”.
