CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — In a significant move, the Champaign County Board has thrown its support behind a proposed state bill designed to impose stricter regulations on gun manufacturers within Illinois.
The proposed legislation, known as the RIFL Act—short for Responsibility in Firearms Legislation—aims to hold gun manufacturers financially accountable. Under this act, companies would be required to contribute to a fund as a condition for retaining their licenses. The contribution amount would be directly tied to the public health costs associated with crimes involving their firearms.
The funds collected through this initiative would be allocated to cover medical expenses for victims of gun-related violence.
Elly Hanauer-Friedman, the Finance Chair for Champaign County, emphasized the importance of the board’s endorsement, stating, “By showing our support, we ensure that our representatives in Springfield know we are closely monitoring this legislation.”
