In a tragic incident earlier this month, a Texas man who was reportedly under the influence and speeding, ran a red light, triggering a four-car collision. This accident resulted in one vehicle overturning into a ditch, causing its pregnant driver to go into early labor.

The woman was immediately transported to a hospital for emergency surgery. Unfortunately, despite the medical efforts, she suffered a miscarriage, as reported by KENS.

Alexander Mendoza, 30, is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the crash on February 19. According to a probable cause statement from deputies, Mendoza exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and the scent of alcohol. An open beer bottle, still containing alcohol, was discovered on his vehicle’s floorboard.

Authorities reported that Mendoza was driving at 75 miles per hour in a zone where the speed limit was 40 miles per hour.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar stated that while Mendoza’s current charge pertains to the injuries sustained by the woman, additional charges could be considered pending the results of a toxicology report.

“Now we are still waiting on the results of the Intoxilyzer,” Salazar said. “And once we obtain these results, if indeed it does show that he was intoxicated to that level, and that directly led to the death of the child, he may additionally face charges of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the baby as well.”

Mendoza was arrested Tuesday at a nearby military base, where he is a civilian employee. ‘

Law&Crime said he was being held on a $125,000 bond and is due in court again on May 5.
