Authorities are gearing up to hand back Nancy Guthrie’s home in Arizona to her family as the search for the missing 84-year-old stretches into its fourth week, according to sources who spoke with NBC News in a report dated Wednesday, February 25.

Nancy, who is the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was first reported missing on February 1. Her residence near Tucson has been at the heart of the investigation, with law enforcement previously gathering DNA and other crucial evidence from the site. Two federal law enforcement officials have indicated that the recent activities at the home aim to prepare for its return to the family, as investigators have concluded that it no longer needs to be preserved as a crime scene.

The case has drawn widespread attention, leading to over 23,000 tips being submitted to the FBI hotline. Remarkably, 750 of those tips came in within just 12 hours after Savannah, who is 54, publicly announced a $1 million reward for information leading to her mother’s safe return.

“She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an interview with NBC’s Liz Kreutz that aired on Today on Wednesday.

Nancy was last seen at around 9:45 p.m. on January 31, following a dinner at her daughter Annie’s home. Concern arose when she failed to attend a virtual church service with friends the next morning, prompting her family to report her missing.

While a suspect has not been officially identified, the FBI has previously released footage from a Nest camera showing a masked and armed individual outside Nancy’s residence. Meanwhile, forensic teams continue to analyze mixed DNA samples gathered from the property as they work to unravel the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
