Prime Minister Albanese affirmed his support for the United States’ efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and disrupting international peace and security. However, he refrained from commenting directly on the recent military strikes.
“The regime in Iran has launched a harsh clampdown on its citizens, leading to the deaths of countless Iranian civilians. A regime that holds power through oppression and the murder of its own people lacks any legitimacy,” Albanese remarked.
In light of two attacks on Jewish synagogues in Australia in 2024, Albanese stated, “These atrocious acts aimed at Australia’s Jewish community were designed to instill fear, divide our society, and challenge our sovereignty.”
Following these incidents, Australia took decisive action by expelling Iran’s ambassador and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
Albanese further criticized Iran’s role, describing it as a “destabilizing force” due to its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.
He said it was a “threat to world peace”.
”The international community has been clear that the Iranian regime can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” Albanese added.
“Australia stands with the brave people of Iran in their struggle against oppression.”
Opposition leader Angus Taylor called Iran’s regime ”authoritarian, antisemitic and abhorrent.”
“It wants nuclear weapons, seeks the destruction of Israel, has encouraged terrorism through its proxies – Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis – and has supplied weapons to Russia to support Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” he said in a post on X.
“We pray for the Iranian people at this time.”
