Mark Carney Aligns with Trump: A Surprising Stance on Iran Policy

On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his support for President Trump’s military actions against Iran, aimed at preventing the nation from developing nuclear capabilities. Carney also advocated for increased measures to restrict Iran’s activities.

“Canada aligns with the United States in its efforts to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to prevent the Iranian regime from posing further threats to global peace and security,” Carney declared in his statement.

He emphasized, “Canada’s stance is unequivocal: The Islamic Republic of Iran is a central source of turmoil and terror in the Middle East, possesses one of the most appalling human rights records globally, and must be barred from obtaining or creating nuclear arms.”

Carney’s endorsement comes at a time when numerous European allies are urging restraint and advocating for a reduction of tensions in the Middle East. Leaders from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are calling on the U.S. to re-enter negotiations with Iran.

Carney’s support is particularly significant given the often turbulent relations between Ottawa and Washington during Trump’s first year back in office, characterized by frequent disputes over trade issues and Trump’s imposing tariffs.

Tensions escalated last month after Carney delivered a speech in Davos, Switzerland, in which he declared a “rupture” in the old world order.

Trump in his own speech said Canada “should be grateful to us” and declared “Canada lives because of the United States,” telling the prime minister to “remember that.”

After the president earlier this month threatened to block the opening of a major bridge between Detroit and Ontario, Carney said he had a “positive” conversation with Trump.

Carney on Saturday urged Canadians in Iran to shelter in place while calling for “the protection of all civilians in this conflict.”
