(KTLA) – A tragic incident has unfolded at Reseda High School, where a 12-year-old student has passed away following a severe altercation involving a metal water bottle. The victim’s family has shared that the attack occurred 10 days prior to the girl’s death.

The victim’s mother, Elma Chuquipa, informed Nexstar’s KTLA that her daughter, Khimberly, was assaulted by another 12-year-old student in a school corridor. The attack involved the other student hurling a metal water bottle at Khimberly.

Initially, Khimberly was treated in the emergency room for her injuries and subsequently released. However, her condition worsened days later when she suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered she had suffered a brain hemorrhage. Tragically, she did not survive.

The Los Angeles Police Department is currently treating this case as a homicide and has launched an investigation. At this time, no further details have been disclosed by the authorities.

On Friday night, a protest took place outside the school, where supporters gathered to lay flowers and call for justice for Khimberly. Her family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to cover medical and funeral expenses. By Friday evening, the fundraiser had garnered over $13,000 in donations.

“As the baby of our family, she brought a special light and joy into our lives,” the GoFundMe page reads. “She loved her family, music, volleyball, walks with her two beloved dogs, and had many dreams for the future. Tragically, Khimberly’s life was cut short following a bullying incident at school.”

Reseda High is a charter school that educates students from grades 6-12. A spokesperson with the Los Angeles Unified School District issued a statement following the student’s death:

“The Los Angeles Unified School District is deeply saddened by the death of a Reseda High School student,” the LAUSD statement reads. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire school community. Out of respect for the family and to protect confidentiality, we cannot share details. The District remains committed to providing support to students, staff, and families affected by this loss, including counseling services and additional resources on campus. The District takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously. We are currently cooperating with law enforcement in connection with this incident.”
