The anime world was buzzing with excitement for the Winter 2026 season, as fans eagerly awaited the premieres of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2. These two series, with their enormous fanbase and critical acclaim, seemed unbeatable. However, against all odds, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku has risen to the challenge and achieved the unexpected.
In a surprising turn of events, Hell’s Paradise Season 2, Episode 8, has outperformed both JJK and Frieren in individual IMDb episode ratings for three consecutive weeks. This success isn’t limited to critical acclaim; viewership numbers also reveal that Hell’s Paradise has occasionally surged past these giants throughout the month. Once seen as an underdog in the Dark Trio, this series is now capturing widespread attention as the season’s essential watch.
While Frieren and Jujutsu Kaisen continue to enjoy immense popularity, the data from February tells a different story. For three weeks running, Hell’s Paradise has consistently surpassed these leading shonen anime in IMDb ratings, marking a significant achievement and highlighting its growing appeal.
Hell’s Paradise Is Consistently Outperforming Both Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren in Terms of Ratings
Frieren and Jujutsu Kaisen are both immensely popular, but when it comes to ratings throughout the month of February, numbers don’t lie. Hell’s Paradise is on an impressive 3-week streak of beating the two biggest shonen anime series this year in IMDb ratings by a significant margin.
That’s through no major fault of JJK or Frieren‘s own. Both series have consistently delivered strong episodes rated above an 8 out of 10, but even those strong scores just can’t compete with Hell’s Paradise’s near-perfect ratings. Impressively, Hell’s Paradise has not released a single episode below a 9 out of 10 on IMDb for 3 weeks.
Specifically, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Episodes 6, 7 and 8 were subsequently rated at an 8.3, 8.2 and 9.1 on IMDB. Meanwhile, Frieren Season 2 Episodes 4, 5 and 6 received an 8.7, 8.1 and 8.4, respectively. In comparison, Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episodes 6, 7 and 8 have achieved respective ratings of 9.1, 9.3 and 9.2.
Hell’s Paradise has been close to perfection for almost a whole month straight, and fans are finally taking notice. On February 24th, Hell’s Paradise even surpassed JJK and Frieren in worldwide Crunchyroll viewership, hitting #1 on the streaming platform for the day according to Flix Patrol’s data. At the time of writing, Hell’s Paradise still sits at #5 on Crunchyroll worldwide, with JJK at #1 and Frieren at #10. Hell’s Paradise‘s consistent quality over the course of the past month is finally getting the anime the recognition it deserves with both the critics and fans.
Hell’s Paradise’s Pure Quality is Practically Untouchable Right Now
It makes sense that Hell’s Paradise is doing so well in terms of critical reception right now. The series is in the midst of its biggest battle yet, as Gabimaru, Shigeru, Yuzuriha and the rest of the group finally confront Lord Tensen head on. But it’s not just the story and action that keep improving in Hell’s Paradise Season 2: it’s the production value.
It’s as though MAPPA reserved Hell’s Paradise’s budget for its latter half; the last few episodes have been eerily consistent in quality from start to finish. Hell’s Paradise Season 2, Episode 8 even went viral for its impressive art direction. A fan-made comparison image of the artwork from the manga side-by-side with the art from the anime has been gaining traction online due to how MAPPA actually elevates the source material’s already celebrated art.
Hell’s Paradise creator Yuji Kaku is renowned for his detailed art style in the original manga. He is widely regarded as the best pure artist of the three Dark Trio mangaka. The fact MAPPA is somehow matching and even surpassing his quality in specific stills from the anime speaks volumes to the passion behind this adaptation.
No matter what, Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren are still shonen anime staples that fans will always follow, and both series are ramping up the action for upcoming episodes in their own ways. Despite it falling just short of Hell’s Paradise, JJK’s latest episode was actually its highest-rated in a while, due in large part to the extraordinarily meme-worthy introduction of Hiromi Higuruma’s Domain Expansion. Similarly, Frieren has just begun its highly anticipated Divine Revolte arc, and its upcoming episode is expected to be its most action-packed of the season so far.
The stars are definitely aligning for both Frieren and JJK to retake their spots over Hell’s Paradise in the coming weeks, but that doesn’t change anything. Hell’s Paradise has already made its statement as a series that can absolutely compete with the best of them, and fans are finally paying attention.
