China urges restraint near Strait of Hormuz amid shipping fears
China has urged all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to prioritize the safety of the Strait of Hormuz, an essential corridor for oil and gas transportation, while also pledging to implement strategies to safeguard its energy needs.
This strategic passageway handles nearly one-fourth of the world’s oil transported by sea, along with a considerable volume of cargo.
The situation escalated when Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced the closure of the strait on Saturday, leading several major international shipping companies to suspend their operations through the area.
At a routine press briefing on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, stated, “China calls upon all parties to immediately halt military actions, avoid further escalation, ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and prevent broader repercussions on the global economy.”
Mao further emphasized, “Energy security holds significant importance for the global economic landscape… China will take the necessary measures to guarantee its energy security.”
