WASHINGTON — Moviegoers frequenting AMC theaters over the past four years have likely encountered the memorable advertisement featuring Nicole Kidman. In the ad, Kidman stands outside a theater in the rain, hooded, before stepping inside to sit in an empty auditorium, her silhouette illuminated by the light of the projector. Her voiceover captures the enchantment of cinema, saying, “heartbreak feels good in a place like this.”
This week, during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Kidman disclosed the payment she received for the now-iconic ad, which was filmed amid the COVID pandemic.
Reflecting on the ad’s unexpected success, Kidman shared, “I had no idea that thing was going to work. We did it out of the purest of intentions.”
The primary goal behind the project was to support the movie theater industry, which faced significant challenges during the pandemic. To bring this vision to life, Kidman collaborated with writer Billy Ray and director Jeff Cronenweth, alongside the crew from “Being the Ricardos,” a film she was working on at that time.
Those intentions were to help out movie theaters, which were struggling during the pandemic. She said enlisted the help of writer Billy Ray, director Jeff Cronenweth and the crew of “Being the Ricardos,” which she was filming at the time.
“Called in all these favors, we did it for nothing, and then it went off,” Kidman said.
From her own lips, she did it for no money — only the love of movies.
Kidman was on “The Tonight Show” promoting her new movie “Scarpetta.”
