Luke missed out on the Manchester United win over Crystal Palace over the weekend due to ‘illness’ which is presumed down to him welcoming his fourth child. Â
Head coach Michael Carrick provided an update on his United squad, ahead of Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at Newcastle United.
The team moved into third place with the weekend win over Crystal Palace and are looking to extend an unbeaten run to 12 games.
During a briefing with broadcasters at Carrington, head coach Carrick was asked about the availability of Shaw and Harry Maguire, after they were withdrawn due to feeling ill in the victory over Palace.
‘Yeah, we’re hoping so,’ he replied about their involvement at St James’ Park. ‘We’re working towards it.
‘They weren’t feeling too good. We’ve still got a little bit of time to the game and we will just have to see how they feel. So we’ll obviously give them every chance.
‘No, it wasn’t injury, it’s just both of them weren’t feeling too good. So, yeah, it’s one of those things really. But we’ll just have to see how they are today and tomorrow morning.’

It comes after Luke kick started the year being forced to shrugged off criticism from fans, after sparking a wave of backlash by taking part in viral TikTok trend.
The footballer angered Manchester United supporters after featuring in the ’embarrassing’ video at a lavish New Year’s Eve party.
The clip saw Luke and his wife Anouska join their pals, including influencer Molly-Mae, in miming along to Mugshot Freestyle (The Northern Boys Remix).
But viewers weren’t amused by the England star mouthing the line ‘Your mum’s on benefits’, while he rakes in £150,000 a week at Man United.
The club’s fans took to social media to blast the injured player, while highlighting the Red Devils’ current struggles.
However, Luke’s friends have claimed that he is unbothered by the backlash, having ‘grown a thick skin’ due to his long sporting career.
Speaking to The Sun, one pal explained: ‘Luke Shaw is used to the backlash he gets on a daily basis and has people joking around with him about the fact he gets paid more for being off the pitch than he does on the pitch as he’s always injured.
‘Even though the TikTok video was filmed at a private gathering, it ended up going viral, but Luke didn’t have a problem with it.
‘To him, it was just a bit of light-hearted fun. He’s so used to the abuse he doesn’t let it bother him.’Â
