Netflix has unveiled a sneak peek of its forthcoming adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, along with an unexpected announcement regarding the show’s future.
On Tuesday, March 3, the streaming giant released the first image from the series in a blog post, revealing that the show has already secured a second season renewal—even though the premiere episode is slated for release on July 9.
The image depicts the patriarch of the Ingalls family steering a horse-drawn wagon, with his three daughters following closely on the iconic prairie.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine expressed her gratitude in a statement to Tudum: “I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive. We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”

The series draws inspiration from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s century-old book series, which chronicles a family’s life in the American West during the 1800s. This Netflix adaptation is the latest in a line of adaptations, following the original NBC series that aired from 1974 to 1983, along with several TV movies, including the pilot.
Netflix’s adaptation stars Alice Halsey as the lead character, Laura Ingalls, alongside Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s older sister, Mary; Luke Bracey as Laura’s father, Charles Ingalls; and Crosby Fitzgerald as Laura’s mother, Caroline Ingalls.
Netflix stated that the decision to renew the show for a second season before the first has even premiered is part of a larger effort to satisfy what it calls a “surging demand for feel-good, heartland-rooted comfort programming” on the platform.
