GEORGIA – A cautionary alert has been issued by numerous law enforcement agencies throughout Georgia regarding a new scam circulating in the state.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook to warn residents about a fraudulent scheme. The post advised that if individuals receive any form of communication—be it a text, email, or message—that appears to be a “Notice of Traffic Citation Hearing – Toll Violation” purportedly from the “State Court of Fulton County,” they should exercise extreme caution. Specifically, the message instructs recipients not to interact with the QR code provided, emphasizing: DO NOT CLICK IT. DO NOT SCAN IT. DO NOT PAY IT.

This scam is reportedly spreading rapidly across Georgia, and residents are urged to remain vigilant.

To help identify the scam, the Sheriff’s Office pointed out a few warning signs:

A few red flags:

  • Courts do not send random toll violation notices with QR codes for payment.
  • Generic judge names.
  • Urgent threats of arrest, license suspension, and contempt charges to pressure you.
  • Requests to scan a QR code or pay immediately

Scammers are counting on folks to panic and pay before thinking it through. Don’t give them the satisfaction.

If you’re unsure whether you owe a citation, contact your local court directly using a verified phone number — not one provided in a suspicious message.
