Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison are set to appear before the House Oversight and Governmental Reform Committee on Wednesday morning. Their testimony is part of an ongoing investigation into a significant welfare fraud scandal within the state.

The committee, led by Chairman James Comer from Kentucky, had earlier requested that Walz and Ellison submit any pertinent records, documents, and communications related to the fraud. In December, Comer extended an invitation for them to testify in person.

As part of the comprehensive investigation, Comer has also sought all pertinent suspicious activity reports from the Treasury Department and arranged for transcribed interviews with both current and former Minnesota state officials.

This session represents the second hearing in the committee’s ongoing probe into the matter.

In response to the scandal, Governor Walz recently introduced a legislative package aimed at curbing fraud. This action came shortly after the federal government suspended $259.5 million in Medicaid funding to Minnesota, a decision made by the Trump administration.

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) previously called on Walz and Ellison to provide any records, documents and communications regarding the welfare fraud for investigators, and he invited them in December to testify.

Comer also requested all relevant suspicious activity reports from the Treasury Department, along with transcribed interviews with current and former Minnesota state officials, as part of the investigation.

Wednesday’s event marks the second hearing amid the probe.

Walz unveiled a legislative package last week intended to mitigate fraud a day after the Trump administration paused $259.5 million in Medicaid funds for the North Star State.

The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EST.
