An urgent AMBER Alert has been activated for a Texas teenager who vanished after departing from the Bexar County jail in San Antonio on Monday morning.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that 17-year-old Briana Guerra, a student at Southwest Preparatory School, appeared on surveillance video around 8 a.m. in the 1100 block of West Commerce Street.
Officials have expressed serious concern for her safety, noting potential mental health issues, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
Prior to her disappearance, Guerra had attended a convention at Community Bible Church on Saturday, where her mother later picked her up, as covered by San Antonio Express News.
Following the event, police arrested her on a family assault charge but subsequently released her during what they described as a “mental health episode.”
“We begged them not to take her,” her mother, Raquel Guerra, told the outlet, adding that she left her money and home behind when arrested.
“I explained over and over again, she missed her dosage of medicine because she went to the convention.”
Briana’s father reportedly went to the jail with Briana’s medication, but the jail informed him she would be released soon. At around 1 a.m. he returned and and was told she would be released in a few hours.
Upon release at around 3 a.m., Briana vanished.
She was last seen in denim jeans, a blue short-sleeved shirt, and glitter Crocs.
“We don’t understand how they could let a minor just walk out of there, especially if she they have been warned several times over she had mental illness,” her mother said.
Raquel added that Briana fled one time in 2024, after her brother was killed, News4SA reports.
Briana is described as standing 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing around 130 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.
