Authorities have taken a person of interest into custody for questioning regarding the tragic discovery of two young girls found dead in suitcases in a Cleveland field earlier this week.

Cleveland Police Sergeant Freddie Diaz disclosed that while the individual has not been formally arrested, they were identified during a search at a residence close to where the bodies were located, according to a report by WOIO.

The police have not yet revealed the reasons that prompted them to secure a search warrant for this particular address.

On Wednesday, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner revealed through DNA testing that the girls were indeed half-sisters, though their identities have not yet been confirmed.

Previously, CrimeOnline reported that the grim discovery was made by a dog walker. The individual contacted authorities after their dog alerted them to the area, leading police to uncover two suitcases in shallow graves nearby.

Police said they believe one of the girls is between 8 1/2 and 13 years old, and the other is 10 1/2 to 14 years old.

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said that neither girl matched with any local children who had been reported missing.

Any with information should call the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit at 216-623-5464.
