AKRON, Ohio (WJW) A Barberton man faces formal charges after allegedly assaulting a local police officer with a claw hammer last month.
On Wednesday, February 25, a Summit County grand jury indicted 34-year-old Jacob Culbertson from Barberton. He faces multiple felony charges, including assault, resisting arrest, and domestic violence, as revealed in court documents.
Police officers were called to a residence on Charles Avenue on the morning of February 2. The call was in response to a domestic disturbance at the home where Culbertson resided with his parents.
According to a Barberton police report, Culbertson’s mother contacted 911, reporting that her son was “out of control” and had physically attacked his father.

Culbertson’s mother called 911 saying the man was “out of control” and had assaulted his father, according to a Barberton police report.
He said Culbertson had been drinking alcohol all night and was making loud noises, according to the report. After the father asked him to stop and after his mother had left for work, the father said Culbertson threw a near-empty can of beer at him and hit him with “some sort of rubberized stick.”
Officers arrived to find Culbertson holed up in his bedroom wearing a bulletproof vest with hard plates and carrying a pocket knife and ordered him out so he could be arrested, according to the report.
When officers busted through the door, he allegedly struck a police officer in the head with a hammer. The bloodied officer retreated into the hallway as other officers moved in and arrested Culbertson, using a Taser to subdue him, according to the report.
The officer who was struck in the head was transported to a hospital.
Culbertson is due for arraignment on the indicted charges on March 9. He remains jailed on a $300,000 bond set in the lower court.
A protection order prohibits Culbertson from returning to the house, according to the report.
