The Texas primary elections have wrapped up, and Mick Mulvaney asserts that the strong backing for Democratic candidates underscores the determination of the left to challenge President Trump.

“The Democrats have a deep-seated dislike for Donald Trump,” the political analyst remarked during an appearance on “On Balance.” “Their focus isn’t so much on who the candidate is; they’re casting their votes to send a message against Trump.”

In Texas, significant primary contests unfolded for the Senate, the state attorney general position, and several House seats.

Breaking down the initial midterm primaries of 2026:

In a fiercely contested Senate Democratic primary on Tuesday, State Rep. James Talarico emerged victorious over Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas. Meanwhile, veteran Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, along with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, are gearing up for a runoff in May.

State Rep. James Talarico topped Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, in a hotly contested Senate Democratic primary Tuesday, while longtime Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton head to a runoff in May.

Democratic turnout surged in the Lone Star State, adding to signs of the party’s midterm momentum.

“The Democrats did a good job,” Mulvaney added. “They did a great job.”

“I think it’s the first time in our adult lifetimes that they turned out more voters in a primary than the Republicans have. No one’s really counting on folks who voted for Donald Trump or even John Cornyn flipping over to vote for James Tallarico.”

Trump didn’t want to endorse potential losing candidate: Mulvaney

Mulvaney also shed light on why Trump didn’t endorse either Republican nominee for the Senate races: he didn’t want to attach himself to a candidate who might lose.

“This was such a close race … he was afraid to sort of get involved early,” Mulvaney said. “I think there’s a combination of things.”

“You end up now here at the end where he’s going to have to endorse one way or the other, because the bottom line is this .. the Republicans really, really wanted Jasmine Crockett to win the Democrat primary last night because they figured either Paxton or Cornyn could beat her because she’s thoroughly unelectable in the state of Texas.”
