In a tragic case that has gripped the state of Maine, a 31-year-old man has been convicted of a heinous crime, marking a grim Christmas memory for all involved. Tyler Witham-Jordan now faces a lengthy prison sentence for the brutal killing of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter, Makinzlee Handrahan, who was found lifeless in her bed on Christmas Day 2022. The court heard that Witham-Jordan, consumed by opioid withdrawal and agitated by the child’s recent illness, violently assaulted the toddler.

After a nine-day trial in the Sagadahoc County Superior Court, the jury in Lincoln County delivered a verdict of guilty for depraved indifference murder. This recent trial follows an earlier one that concluded in a mistrial, adding another layer of complexity to a deeply sorrowful case.

The initial trial, which commenced in December 2024, featured similar evidence and testimony, notably from the child’s mother. The emotional turmoil reached a peak as she was shown distressing images of her daughter’s battered body, leading to a raw outburst where she confronted Witham-Jordan with a heart-wrenching cry, “What did you do to my baby?”

Witham-Jordan’s first trial began in December 2024 and the proceedings included much of the same evidence presented in the latest trial, including testimony from the victim’s mother, WGME reported.

But during the first trial, when the victim’s mother was shown photographs of her daughter’s bruised and beaten body, she broke down on the witness stand and screamed at Witham-Jordan, “What did you do to my baby?”

The judge reasoned that the mother’s reaction compromised Witham-Jordan’s right to a fair trial.
