The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented a ground stop at O’Hare International Airport, which is set to last until 9:30 a.m.
The morning starts with thick fog, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory for the region that will remain in place until 10 a.m.
According to Tracy Butler, an ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist, there is also a likelihood of rain and thunderstorms developing.
While much of the Chicago area faces a Level 1 severe weather threat, certain suburbs to the south, west, and north are under a heightened Level 2 risk of severe conditions.
There is a chance for rain for the far west and northwest parts of the area after 7 a.m. Butler said the rain may hold off in the city until about 10 a.m., but it will still be misty.
A separate line of storms is possible in the mid to late afternoon, with potential to bring large hail and strong winds.
Overnight into early Saturday morning, another line of storms is expected to move through, bringing potential for strong winds.
The rain is expected to end by between 7-8 a.m. and the warmed part of the day with temperatures falling in the afternoon.
