Authorities have taken two individuals into custody linked to last month’s shooting at a sheriff’s patrol car in Rolling Hills Estates.
At the time of the incident, a deputy was present inside the vehicle.
Officials reported that following the incident, the suspects escaped to Hawaii, where they were apprehended on March 3.
The shooting occurred on the morning of February 22, shortly after the deputy had finished dealing with a reckless driving incident on the 600 block of Deep Valley Drive. As the deputy was departing, a shot was fired, striking the rear section of the patrol car.
In related news, a shocking daylight stabbing in San Francisco’s Chinatown has been captured on video.
The sheriff’s deputy had just finished responding to a call for a reckless driver on the morning of Feb. 22 on the 600 block of Deep Valley Drive. As he was leaving, a gunshot rang out and the rear portion of his vehicle was hit.
The deputy, who was not injured, found a single bullet hole in his patrol vehicle.
Investigators say 39-year-old Shane Michael Mahoney is accused of firing a rifle from a balcony at an apartment complex in the area, and Arianna Charmaine Mitchell allegedly aided Mahoney in his efforts to evade law enforcement after the crime.
Both are accused of fleeing the area and were arrested on Tuesday in Hawaii. They’re currently awaiting extradition.
“Detectives recovered surveillance video, an assault rifle, and three semi-automatic firearms and ballistic evidence,” said L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna during a news conference Thursday.
Mahoney is charged with one felony count of attempted murder and a felony count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm upon a peace officer.
If convicted, he faces up to 35 years to life in state prison.
Mitchell was charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact and faces up to three years in prison.
L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, “Firing a weapon at a law enforcement officer shows a profound and callous disregard for the people who live in that community. This was an extremely dangerous attack that thankfully did not result in anyone being injured.”
Sheriff Luna said targeting law enforcement will not be tolerated.” If you try to harm one of our deputies, you will be pursued relentlessly across city lines, across state lines, or wherever in this world we need to find you. You will be held accountable for those actions.”
An arraignment date has not been set, but KTLA has been told it will happen in Torrance.
