LOS ANGELES — This year’s Oscar nominations include a poignant documentary short centered on reproductive rights. The powerful 30-minute film unfolds within the walls of an abortion clinic, tackling its serious subject matter head-on.
The film’s trailer features a voice proclaiming, “I rely heavily on my faith while I’m here because the devil is busy out there.”
Titled “The Devil Is Busy,” the documentary provides an unflinching look at a women’s health care center in Atlanta. Here, persistent protestors are a common sight, patients often feel apprehensive, and a dedicated employee named Tracy stands as a beacon of support for those seeking assistance.
“Tracy is incredibly courageous and confident, driven by her deep passion for the women, staff, and visitors who come to the clinic daily. Her commitment to their safety is paramount,” explained Christalyn Hampton, the director of the Oscar-nominated documentary short. “My goal is to humanize what is often seen as a divisive topic.”
Although Hampton has previous experience as a documentary producer, this project marks her debut as a co-director. Her work has earned her a place at the Oscars, where she aims to cast a spotlight on women’s health care issues. Hampton reflects on how, given today’s health restrictions, it sometimes feels as though it’s not yet 2026.
“No, it does not,” Hampton said. “And, you know, I feel like we’re trying to push boundaries and figure out new ways to tell stories and be truth tellers. And so I think that’s going to be my journey from here on out is really trying to find the stories that are important to people and just try to keep telling them.”
If you’d like to watch “The Devil Is Busy” before Oscar Sunday, you’ll find it on HBO Max.
