KYIV – A Russian missile strike on a residential building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulted in the tragic loss of at least seven lives on Saturday, while 10 others, including three children, sustained injuries, according to local officials.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the attack and appealed for a global reaction. He detailed that Russia unleashed 29 missiles and 480 drones on Ukraine overnight, primarily targeting energy facilities in Kyiv and surrounding central regions. Damage was reported in at least seven other locations throughout the nation.
Preliminary reports indicate that Ukraine’s air defense successfully intercepted 19 missiles and 453 drones. However, impacts from nine missiles and 26 strike drones were recorded across 22 sites.
In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, emergency responders are diligently searching through the debris, hoping to find any survivors.
In the Kyiv area, local authorities reported damage from falling debris across three districts. Meanwhile, in the southern Odesa region, 80 firefighters were engaged in battling significant fires at infrastructure sites after a drone attack. The state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, announced that damage to railway infrastructure necessitated route adjustments in the center-west of Ukraine.
“There must be a response from partners to these savage strikes against life,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X. “Russia has not abandoned its attempts to destroy Ukraine’s residential and critical infrastructure, and therefore support must continue. We count on active work with the European Union to guarantee greater protection for our people. I am grateful to everyone who helps strengthen our protection.”
Russia has fired tens of thousands of Iranian-designed Shahed drones at Ukraine since it invaded its neighbor just over four years. It has launched a large-scale domestic production of them and battered Ukraine with hundreds of drones in a single night — more than were used during some entire months in 2024.
Iran has responded to joint U.S.-Israeli strikes by launching the same type of drones at countries in the Middle East.
Zelenskyy said he had received a U.S. request for support to defend against the Iranian drones in the Middle East and had given the order for equipment to be provided along with Ukrainian experts.
The war in the Middle East has drawn international attention away from Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II, and forced the postponement of a new round of U. S.-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine planned for this week.
