A high school prank in Georgia took a tragic turn, leading to a teacher’s death and the arrest of five students, one facing charges of homicide.

On Friday night, a harmless attempt to cover a property with toilet paper ended fatally for Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office reported that five teenagers arrived at Hughes’ residence on North Gate Drive around 11:40 p.m. with the intention of carrying out the prank. When Hughes came outside, the teens tried to escape in two separate vehicles.

Authorities stated that Hughes tripped and fell into the street, at which point he was hit by a truck driven by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace, according to a report by WSB-TV.

The teenagers attempted to assist Hughes until first responders arrived and transported him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he unfortunately passed away from his injuries.

Police arrested Wallace at the scene. He faces charges that include first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespassing, and littering.

Four other 18-year-olds—Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz—were arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering.

The Hall County School District expressed deep mourning, describing Hughes as a “passionate teacher and mentor” and a devoted family man in a statement provided by Local12:

“Our hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father; a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues.

“He gave so much to so many in numerous ways. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family. We ask that the media and the public respect their privacy as they grieve.”

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
