Tragedy struck in Pennsylvania as a state trooper was fatally shot on Sunday evening during a traffic stop in Chester County, authorities confirmed.

The incident unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. in West Caln Township, at the intersection of Compass and Michael roads, during what began as a routine traffic stop.

The fallen officer has been identified as Corporal Timothy O’Connor, whose passing was announced by Governor Josh Shapiro in a heartfelt statement.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating news that the Pennsylvania State Police family has lost a son, a hero, and a committed public servant,” Shapiro expressed during a press conference.

He continued, “Corporal Timothy O’Connor was tragically killed tonight while fulfilling his duty to serve others, protect our community, and care for his fellow Pennsylvanians, particularly here in Chester County. The entire Commonwealth, along with the State Police family and Chester County, mourns the loss of Corporal O’Connor.”

Chester County Commissioner Eric Roe said he was praying for the trooper.

“Chester County’s brave police officers put their lives on the line for us every day. I thank all of them for their extraordinary bravery and sacrifice,” Roe said on Facebook.
