Watch: Starmer warns Iran war will damage UK economy over time
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has voiced the concerns of UK residents and businesses regarding the potential economic repercussions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Commenting on the situation, Sir Keir remarked, “I understand the anxiety that many are feeling now, just over a week into this conflict. People are naturally wondering if the situation will deteriorate further and how it might affect their lives and livelihoods.”
He pointed out that while the energy price cap is designed to shield households from market volatility, it is understandable that businesses and others remain vigilant about the unfolding events.
In response to whether former US President Donald Trump could be exacerbating tensions, Sir Keir emphasized the importance of de-escalation, stating, “Our efforts are focused on finding ways to reduce tensions and prevent the situation from worsening.”
In a related note, the Prime Minister highlighted that the UK economy is currently more resilient compared to 2022 when the Russian invasion of Ukraine led to a significant energy price surge.
