WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 24! The latest season of American Idol has rolled out its first theme night for the live shows following the Hawaii rounds, reviving a theme introduced last year. Returning to the show are host Ryan Seacrest and judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan. The competition has now whittled down its contestants to the Top 30, who are set to perform in the ‘Ohana Round in Hawaii on March 9.

Post ‘Ohana Round, the Top 20 contenders of American Idol will engage in another set of performances in Hawaii on March 16 and 23. They will receive guidance from music icons Keke Palmer and Brad Paisley. Following these rounds, the public will have its first opportunity to cast votes. The show will then transition to live broadcasts as it inches closer to declaring its next champion.

The Futon Critic reports that on Monday, March 30, American Idol season 24 will feature Songs of Faith Night, a theme that first appeared last season and sparked some controversy. During season 23, this special event aired as a three-hour segment on Easter Sunday, showcasing songs centered on faith and inspiration. It included performances by Lionel Richie (“Eternity”), Luke Bryan (“Jesus ‘Bout My Kids”), Jelly Roll and Brandon Lake (“Hard Fought Hallelujah”), CeCe Winans and Roman Collins (“Come Jesus Come”), and Carrie Underwood (“How Great Thou Art”).

According to The Futon Critic, on Monday, March 30, American Idol season 24 will present Songs of Faith Night, which debuted last season to some backlash. American Idol season 23 presented a three-hour Songs of Faith Night on Easter Sunday, which featured songs of faith and inspiration. The episode featured many guest performers, including Lionel Richie (“Eternity”), Luke Bryan (“Jesus ‘Bout My Kids”), Jelly Roll and Brandon Lake (“Hard Fought Hallelujah”), CeCe Winans and Roman Collins (“Come Jesus Come”), and Carrie Underwood (“How Great Thou Art”).

Although many fans loved Songs of Faith Night, it caused some controversy because others felt that the theme had no place in a secular show. However, the debut of new judge Carrie, who sings faith-based music in addition to country, and the influx of gospel singers in recent seasons of American Idol, inspired the show to try something new. Jamal Roberts, a gospel and R&B singer, won season 23, so there is definitely an audience for the genre on the show.

In an interview with Billboard, executive producer and showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick revealed that three beloved American Idol theme nights will return in season 24: Disney Night, Rock & Rock Hall of Fame Night, and the Judges’ Song Contest. In the Judges’ Song Contest, each judge chooses a song for each contestant. The contestants must pick one song from the list of three, but they don’t know which judge selected which song. Whichever judge’s songs are chosen the most wins. In season 24, for the first time ever, the Judges’ Song Contest will have a theme: ’90s music.

American Idol has been wowing audiences with its theme nights since season 1. They’re very important to the show because they push the contestants out of their comfort zones, and prove who has what it takes to make it in the music industry. Some of the best performances in American Idol history have emerged when contestants have taken themes and twisted them to fit their own identities. The American Idol season 24 theme nights will be epic.

American Idol airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
