JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — During a meeting with the Johnson City Regional Planning Commission on Tuesday evening, local residents expressed their disapproval of a proposed rezoning plan.

The land in question, located on Antioch Road, could be transformed into a neighborhood of 48 single-family homes if the rezoning is granted. While city officials argue that this project could alleviate the housing shortage, nearby residents are worried about the potential increase in traffic.

Chairman Benjamin Dutton explained the commission’s perspective to News Channel 11, stating, “Our responsibility as the Johnson City Regional Planning Commission is to serve the broader interests of the city. We must consider the demand for diverse housing options across all levels.”

Resident Joe Martin voiced his concerns, saying, “The anticipated surge in traffic through our small neighborhood is alarming. Our street, which currently sees about 100 vehicles daily, could face up to 1,900 trips once the development on Woodland Grove is completed.”

“The amount of traffic that is going to dump onto our small neighborhood streets is appalling,” resident Joe Martin said. “It’s going to go from a street that now has approximately 100 traffic trips a day to 1,900 by the time they build out a development they’ve already approved on Woodland Grove.”

If the Planning Commission approves the request, it will then head to the City Commission.
