A beloved teacher from Baltimore was tragically found dead at her elementary school, leaving her community in mourning and disbelief.

Arundel Elementary School’s Principal, Kerry-Ann Malcolm, conveyed the heartbreaking news in a letter dated March 9, which was made available on the district’s website. “With a heavy heart, I announce the devastating loss of our colleague, Ms. Deborah Tolson,” Malcolm stated. “She served our school as a Math Interventionist and was found deceased over the weekend within our school premises.”

Malcolm also noted, “We are in the process of gathering further information and will provide updates as they become available.”

The Baltimore Police Department, speaking to Oxygen, confirmed that investigators did not find any signs of trauma or foul play at the scene.

“The victim’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death,” a police spokesperson explained. “As the investigation is still active, no further details will be disclosed at this moment.”

Tolson’s manner of death was natural, a spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, told Oxygen, while the cause is intracerebral hemorrhage.

According to Cleveland Clinic, intracerebral hemorrhage is a type of stroke that causes brain bleeding.

Tolson worked at the school for seven years and in the district for 23 years, Malcolm wrote in the letter, calling the educator “very beloved” by students and staff and “a pillar” of her community.

Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day, wrote Malcolm, and the district crisis team was poised to support the school community.

“Please expect our students to be affected in some way with this news,” wrote Malcolm. “I encourage you to talk about what happened and to allow your child to discuss her or his feelings and thoughts.”
