Australia‘s newest multimillionaire deleted the good news thinking it was spam rather than an email letting him know he’d won the whole Powerball $50 million jackpot, lottery officials say.
The Victorian man was watching Carlton’s narrow win over Richmond in the AFL from his couch when his numbers were drawn out to crown him the sole division one winner.

The numbers drawn in tonight’s Powerball game, number 1556, were 5, 6, 18, 9, 14, 4, and 13.

The Powerball itself was number 14, a figure that, according to The Lott representatives, holds special significance for a Melbourne man as it matches his favorite football player’s number.

Initially, attempts to contact the winner were unsuccessful due to an outdated phone number on his account. However, he was eventually reached through email.

Upon speaking with an official, the man reportedly exclaimed, “Is it true?”

He further shared that he had noticed the initial email notification but dismissed it as spam, deleting it without opening it.

“But then I received another email, and I thought, ‘maybe I’ll check the app’

“Unbelievable! Fifty million dollars! That’s insane!

The man said he was in shock.

“I’m just sitting here watching the footy with my son,” he said.

“When my wife gets home, have I got news for her!

“I think she won’t believe me, but when I show her the ticket, she’ll get the shakes and start crying.”

The father said he changed up his normal numbers for a random selection after having a “small win” the other day.

“I always used to say to my friends and family that if I won $50 million, I would dedicate myself to helping others,” he said.

“It’s almost like I put it in the universe! I’d like to look at some kind of work that helps the community.”

But of course the winning won’t all go to other people.

“I can’t wait to also go on realestate.com and browse for houses to buy,” the Wyndham Vale man said.

“I never thought we’d be able to buy our very own home after renting for such a long time!

“We’re not going to buy anything out of this world. We’ll continue to be humble and buy a house in our suburb.

“We’ll also look to buy each of our children a house of their own. We’ll all be mortgage free!

“This is so life changing. I can’t thank you enough!”
