A chilling crime unfolded in New Jersey as a man, Vaughn Stewart, 37, took the lives of his estranged wife and her parents, fulfilling a threat he had made just a month earlier, according to law enforcement.
The tragic events transpired at the residence of Allan and Michelle Russell in Berkeley Township. Stewart fatally shot his 38-year-old wife, Deonna Stewart, along with her parents, Allan, 61, and Michelle, 60, on that fateful Tuesday. In a grim conclusion to this act of violence, Stewart turned the weapon on himself, later succumbing to his injuries at the hospital. The couple’s three young children, including a baby, a 3-year-old, and a 5-year-old, were present in the house but remained physically unharmed, as reported by The Asbury Park Press.
The sequence of the attack, as detailed by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, began with the shooting of the Russells. Stewart then pursued Deonna, who attempted to flee, her final desperate cries captured on neighborhood surveillance cameras as she shouted, “Murderer!” Her lifeless body was discovered approximately 50 yards from the home.
According to NJ.com, Vaughn Stewart had a documented history of domestic violence. Only a month prior to this tragedy, he was involved in a violent altercation at a QuickChek in Cranford, New Jersey. A family member, whose identity was shielded in court documents, was reportedly assaulted by Stewart, who struck her repeatedly and violently tore a braid from her scalp.
During this prior incident, Stewart was overheard making menacing threats, allegedly vowing to “murder her and her family.” He faced charges of making terroristic threats, harassment, and simple assault. Despite these serious accusations, prosecutors chose not to request his detention while awaiting trial following his court appearance in February.
Prosecutors said that after the suspected murder-suicide, investigators learned that Vaughn and Deonna Stewart were living separately. Deonna Stewart had taken the couple’s three young children with her to live with her parents, the Russells. Vaughn Stewart was living with his mother in Maplewood, New Jersey, where a neighbor told NJ.com that he and a woman he believed to be Deonna Stewart were often heard fighting.
NJ.com reported that Deonna Stewart filed for divorce in April 2024, but the case was dismissed in January 2025.
A neighbor of the Russells told The Asbury Park Press that Allan and Michelle Russell were “the most amazing people” who brought his family care packages after he was injured on the job. The neighbor said the Russells both worked in the medical field and were devoted churchgoers.
