WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Authorities are currently addressing an “active shooter” situation at a synagogue near Detroit, where smoke is visibly rising from the roof.

According to WDIV-TV, a vehicle has crashed into the Temple Israel synagogue located in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, this Thursday, prompting a significant police response. Video footage from the location reveals numerous law enforcement vehicles encircling the premises.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s office has confirmed that efforts are underway to secure and clear the building. In a tense atmosphere, roughly a dozen parents swiftly retrieved their children from an early childhood learning center within the synagogue after receiving clearance from police.

Temple Israel, which is recognized as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States with a membership of 12,000, offers an early childhood education center alongside various educational programs for families and adults, as detailed on its website.

In response to the incident, the Jewish Federation of Detroit has urged all Jewish organizations in the region to implement “lockout protocols,” ensuring that no one enters or exits their facilities.
