In a dramatic turn of events, a truck collided with the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, which houses multiple school facilities. The incident occurred on Thursday, as reported by WDIV-TV, making headlines early Friday AEDT.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is deceased, according to information provided by both the Associated Press and CNN. The situation unfolded with a heavy police presence, as video footage captured the scene being surrounded by numerous police vehicles.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard disclosed that the suspect arrived at the temple, where security personnel, already on alert, engaged him in gunfire. While a vehicle was indeed part of the incident, Sheriff Bouchard indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine if there were additional individuals involved.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at least one person came to the temple and security stationed there “engaged him in gunfire”.
He confirmed a vehicle was involved but said police were still trying to confirm if anyone else was involved.
Bouchard urged anyone within a mile (1.6 kilometres) of the incident to shelter in place “until we figure out exactly what’s going on”.
He said children had been removed from the area and that there were no reports of injuries except for “potentially the shooter”.
Asked if the shooter had been “neutralised”, the sheriff said, “We don’t have that person in custody. It’s a work in progress”.
Bouchard said police were on the scene quickly and had been preparing for such an incident.
“The chief and I have been communicating for almost two weeks every time I’ve gotten some intelligence from the national level, I’ve been sharing,” he said.
“We’ve been talking for two weeks about the potential, sadly, of this happening so there was no lack of preparation.Â
“In addition, all Jewish facilities in the area are going to have a lot of extra presence around it until we figure this out.Â
FBI director Kash Patel said his personnel from his agency were on the scene responding to an “apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation”.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was tracking the situation and working with police to get more information.
“This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” she said in a statement read on air by CNN.Â
“Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan, and I am hoping for everyone’s safety.Â
“Thank you to law enforcement for their swift action.”
Bouchard said it was too early to talk about potential ties to terrorism.
The sheriff’s office said authorities were clearing the building.
About a dozen parents sprinted to get their children from an early childhood learning centre inside the building after getting approval from police.
Temple Israel calls itself the nation’s largest Reform synagogue, with 12,000 members, according to its website.
It has an early childhood education centre and offers educational programs for families and adults.
The Jewish Federation of Detroit advised all Jewish organisations in the area “to go into lockout protocol — nobody in or out of your building”.
