Tragedy struck in Brisbane’s south when two teenagers riding an e-bike lost their lives in a collision with a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Middle Road in Greenbank. The motorcycle reportedly hit the e-bike while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

The teenagers, a boy and a girl, were pronounced dead at the scene, while the motorcyclist was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital, currently listed in stable condition.

Authorities suspect that the e-bike may not have been equipped with lights at the time of the accident.

Police are urging any witnesses or individuals with footage or additional information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

The forensic crash unit is investigating.

Calls for restrictions on e-bikes have been growing as the number of riders, particularly children, dying or suffering serious injuries grows.

Laws vary significantly from state to state and there’s no nationally consistent age limit or other regulations.

Only Western Australia imposes an age-limit on e-bike riders.

Queensland allows people of any age to ride one on most roads and paths without a licence so long as it complies with power limits.

The government is considering the recommendations of a parliamentary inquiry report handed down earlier this month.

It included calls for the devices to be restricted to people aged 16 and over and limit footpath speeds to 10km/h, among other changes.
