BEECH ISLAND, S.C. – In a recent and controversial decision, authorities have chosen not to press charges against a man involved in a fatal stabbing in Beech Island on Monday, sparking significant public debate.

The incident has ignited discussions across social media platforms after it was revealed that Christopher McRae would not face charges for the death of Michael Harvey. Opinions are divided, with some attributing the incident to prolonged harassment by McRae towards Harvey’s family, while others suggest that Harvey may have provoked the situation.

In response, Harvey’s family has publicly voiced their frustration, asserting that he was merely protecting his loved ones and are demanding justice for his death.

“Mike was a wonderful person who died defending his family,” a family member expressed. “The person responsible brought this upon him.”

NewsChannel 6 reached out to a family member, who wished to remain anonymous due to concerns over personal safety, shared by the entire Harvey family amidst the ongoing tension.

He told us McRae had been stalking the family for more than a year after an incident involving Harvey’s wife and one of the Harvey children.

“He made sexual advances to the daughter, who was 14 at the time. Then when Jessica confronted him about it, he slapped Jessica.”

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office confirms McRae was reported for following the teen and catcalling her. He was arrested, charged, and convicted for assaulting her mother.

The Sheriff’s office said that 5 incident reports were filed since September 2024, by the Harveys and by McRae.

“There was a–it seemed to be an ongoing, you know, history of stuff going on between both sides,” Major Jason Griffin with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said.

Harvey’s family member believes McRae always intended to do harm and purposely provoked Harvey. They believe that previous incidents were not taken into consideration when the decision to not file charges was made.

We asked the sheriff’s office to explain.

“The previous reports, yes, they were looked at to see if they can try to determine, you know, why this may have happened. What is the history between these two?” explained Major Griffin. “But the facts and elements of the case Monday is what they have take into consideration to determine if this is a self-defense or if this was a murder.”

We talked to one of McRae’s family members who couldn’t speak on camera, but said:

“I know of him pulling knives on folks over a dozen times. Lord only knows how many other times it’s happened.”

Major Griffin said what happened was tragic, but people can’t take matters into their own hands.

Harvey’s family told us they are afraid for their safety and that McRae could target someone else.
