WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Hill) — A legal challenge has been launched against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) by participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). On Wednesday, these individuals filed a lawsuit contesting the agency’s food restriction waivers, which limit the variety of foods purchasable with SNAP benefits.

Five SNAP beneficiaries from Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and West Virginia are spearheading the lawsuit, with legal representation from the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ). This nonprofit organization is dedicated to promoting justice for low-income families and is challenging the USDA’s implementation of its waiver restriction pilot programs.
