Longtime Police Officer Identified as Injured Security Guard in Michigan Synagogue Incident

The security guard injured in the recent attempted car bombing at a Michigan synagogue has been identified as a veteran police officer.

Danny Phillips, who serves as the director of security at Temple of Israel, was on duty when an armed assailant crashed through the synagogue’s front entrance and began shooting on Thursday, as reported by the Detroit News.

Phillips was subsequently taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained during the attack.

“We are sending our love, prayers, and strength to Danny,” stated Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny during Friday’s Shabbat service.

“Danny is an incredible individual,” she added.

Phillips previously spent 28 years working for the Bloomfield Hills Police Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant before joining Temple Israel in June 2025.
