The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was able to land safely and proceeded to the gate without incident, allowing passengers to disembark as usual, Melbourne Airport officials reported.

As a safety measure, Virgin Australia noted that Aviation Rescue Firefighters were on standby and successfully removed the device from the aircraft.

The call made was a PAN alert, indicating a need for possible assistance but not escalating to an emergency level.

The flight took off from Brisbane just before 1pm (2pm AEDT) and landed in Melbourne just before 4.30pm.
