A tragic double shooting involving a Florida man led to a manhunt, causing a delay at the Players Championship on Saturday morning. This unsettling series of events unfolded near TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, sparking widespread concern in the community.

The incident erupted late Friday night around 10:30 p.m. in a Walgreens parking lot, just a stone’s throw from the golf course. According to St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick, the suspect, 32-year-old Christian Barrios, became embroiled in a potential domestic violence situation, resulting in two acquaintances being shot multiple times.

Both victims were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, neither survived the attack. The suspect, Barrios, who has a long-standing criminal history, managed to evade capture by making his way onto the nearby golf course, as reported by ESPN.

This violent episode not only resulted in a tragic loss of life but also disrupted the third round of The Players Championship. Law enforcement was forced to delay the event on Saturday morning to ensure the safety of attendees and participants as they conducted their search for Barrios.

In the course of his escape, authorities say Barrios encountered PGA staff, seizing a communication radio and potentially other items before fleeing the scene. This brazen act prompted an extensive, multi-agency search effort, according to reports from News 4 Jax. The community remains on edge as the search for Barrios continues.

PGA officials cited “operational considerations” for pushing the public gate opening to 9 a.m. and delaying hospitality access until 11 a.m, according to ESPN.

A high-speed pursuit ensued after Barrios allegedly stole a black BMW. The chase eventually concluded an hour away in Nassau County, where authorities forced the stolen vehicle off the road and into a wooded area.

At around 9 a.m. Saturday, police arrested Barrios after he attempted to escape by foot.

With the suspect in custody and the course cleared for safety, the tournament resumed its normal operations for the weekend’s spectators.

Barrios is being held without the possibility of bond on two counts of first-degree murder. In addition to the homicide charges, he is accused of grand theft auto, shooting into a vehicle, and burglarizing an occupied home while being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.

While he cannot post bail for the murder charges, his bond for the burglary was set at $200,000, with an additional $100,000 for each of the remaining counts, according to News 4 Jax.
