CALUMET PARK, Ill. — Just over a month since a devastating fire swept through an apartment complex in Calumet Park, displaced families are still striving to rebuild their lives.

The blaze erupted on Valentine’s Day, with residents suspecting it originated from the basement boiler room. Charlene Davis, who resides directly above the suspected source, was one of the first to become aware of the emergency.

Since the fire, which ignited before dawn at around 6 a.m., Davis has been living in temporary accommodations, moving from one hotel to another. Upon realizing the danger, she promptly called 911, then hurriedly knocked on her neighbors’ doors to ensure their safety.

In her haste to escape the flames, Davis left behind all her belongings, which were soon consumed by the inferno.

“The fire department told me I was fortunate to have made it out,” Davis recounted, adding that the fire began to penetrate through the floor of her apartment.

Amazingly, all Davis’ neighbors were able to get out before anyone was seriously injured. But since that day, she says she has been struggling to keep going with her life after losing everything in the fire.

“It’s tough, because I have to get all of my identification again, and it’s hard, because they say, you have to have your birth certificate, or, you have to have this. Well, it all got burned up in the fire. It’s been a tough road,” Davis said.

Davis says she and a number of the other residents who prefer not to speak on camera are still waiting to be let into the building to try to salvage any possessions they might be able to find. Many of them have no renter’s insurance and have lost everything.

“I’m able to talk about it now without crying, but some days are harder than others,” Davis said.

ABC7 spoke with a lawyer who represents a number of the residents. He says he is working to come up with some sort of settlement with the owners of the property to help compensate the residents for all they have lost.
