The University of South Florida’s men’s basketball team is making waves this season, securing a spot in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time in 14 years. This achievement comes after their triumphant win over the Wichita State Shockers.
In addition to breaking their lengthy tournament drought, the Bulls clinched their first conference title since 1990, marking a pivotal and historic moment for the program. This remarkable feat also signifies the first time in the team’s history that they have captured both the conference regular season and tournament titles in the same year.
On the bustling campus in Tampa, students and alumni are celebrating this long-awaited success. For many, it feels like a culmination of years of dedication and growth.
“It’s fantastic to see,” expressed Devin Jones, a former USF student. “It’s been a while, but the team has been improving each year. I’m thrilled to witness the progress they’ve made.”
“Love to see it because it’s I know it’s been a while, but we’ve been getting better and better every year. So, happy to see the progress they’ve been making,” former USF student Devin Jones said.
The 30-year-old Tampa native said he was just 16 the last time the Bulls made the tournament.
“Being from here and you know, obviously USF being such a huge part of Tampa, it was a good feeling, like I wasn’t as deep into watching back then versus playing, but I knew there was a lot going on around that time,” Jones said.
Players say confidence has played a major role in the team’s success this season.
Senior forward Izaiyah Nelson said belief in themselves has driven the Bulls through their winning streak.
“That’s the main the goal, you got to believe in yourself, you got to believe in the dance, you got to believe, bro, just believe.”
Current students say they’re hopeful the Bulls’ momentum will continue on the national stage.
“I hope so, I mean, they made it this far. I hope we can keep going. You know, keep that winning streak alive,” senior JD Randall said.
The Bulls enter March Madness riding an 11-game winning streak and will face the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball in Buffalo, N.Y. on March 19.
